Prior authorization (PA) means your insurance wants extra clinical justification before it will pay for a medicine. It is frustrating—but it is also a process you can navigate with fewer delays when everyone knows their role.

Why insurers require it

PAs are common for brand-name drugs, specialty therapies, compounded products in some plans, and medicines outside the preferred formulary. The insurer is asking: is this medically necessary, and have preferred options been tried?

The real workflow (not the phone-tree version)

We bill the claim and receive a PA rejection or requirement
We notify you and start gathering what the plan needs
Your prescriber’s office submits clinical notes, diagnosis codes, and prior therapies
The plan reviews and approves, denies, or asks for more information
We refill and dispense once coverage is active—or discuss alternatives after a denial

What you can do to speed things up

Confirm your insurance card details are current
Return clinician paperwork requests the same day when possible
Ask whether a covered alternative is clinically acceptable while you wait
Check whether a manufacturer copay card can help for commercial insurance

How long it usually takes

Some PAs clear in 24–72 hours. Others take longer when records are incomplete or the plan uses a specialty vendor. Urgent clinical situations should be escalated—tell us if you are completely out of a critical medicine.

If the answer is no

A denial is not always the end. Options may include appeal, a different strength or formulation, or a therapeutically similar covered medicine. We help translate the denial reason into next steps with your prescriber.
