Keeping Insulin and GLP-1 Medications Safe in Houston Heat

Summer in the Houston area is hard on refrigerated medications. A closed car, a hot mailbox, or a kitchen counter near a sunny window can push insulin and GLP-1 pens outside their safe range—sometimes without any visible change.

If you use insulin, tirzepatide, semaglutide, or other cold-chain medicines, a few local habits matter as much as the prescription itself.

Know the “in-use” vs unopened rules

Unopened pens and vials usually stay refrigerated. Once in use, many products can be kept at room temperature for a limited number of days—but “room temperature” does not mean a Texas dashboard. Check the specific product insert, and ask us to mark an in-use discard date on your bag.

Never leave pens in a parked car

Interior temperatures climb fast, even on mild days. Keep an insulated pouch for errands, and bring medicines inside as soon as you get home. If a pen was left in a hot car, do not use it until you confirm with a pharmacist whether it should be replaced.

Plan for delivery and pickup timing

If you use delivery, arrange to be home—or designate a shaded, secure handoff. Tell us when you prefer delivery windows during heat waves. For pickup, go straight home if temperatures are extreme.

Travel days and power outages

For short trips, a quality cooler pack (not direct ice on the pen) helps. During storms or outages, prioritize fridge medicines first and call us if you are unsure whether a product was compromised.

Signs you should call before injecting

• Pen or vial feels unusually warm
• Solution looks cloudy when it should be clear (or the reverse of what your product normally looks like)
• You suspect heat exposure but the dose is due tonight

When in doubt, ask before dosing. Replacing a questionable pen is safer than guessing.
